Abigail Grace Smith (aka Abby) was diagnosed with a medulloblastoma brain tumor at the age of 23 months old on March 3, 2006. Dr. Roger Hudgins removed 100% of her tumor on March 6, 2006. Abby developed posterior fossa syndrome within days after surgery. Abby underwent 30 days of radiation and 12 cycles (21 days on, 7 days off) of chemotherapy. She completed her treatment in late May, 2007. All of Abby’s MRI’s and spinal taps had been clear to date with no evidence of cancer. Dr. Claire Mazewski is our wonderful neuro-oncologist. After a routine follow-up head and spine MRI on September 28, 2007, Abby was diagnosed with drop metastes in her spine in multiple places. Abby endured three cycles of high dose ICE chemotherapy, a cord blood and bone marrow stem cell transplant, and cranial/spinal proton beam radiation. Except for her radiation treatments, Abby has always been a patient at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta – Scottish Rite. Her stem cell transplant was done at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta – Egleston. Her photon/conventional radiation was done at Piedmont Hospital. Her proton beam radiation was performed at University of Florida Proton Therapy Institute in Jacksovnille, FL. She completed her relapse treatment on June 30, 2008. Abby is now taking Accutane as a drug/maintenance therapy for 6-12 months. Only two small places remain on Abby’s spine which are being monitored closely. Abby has mostly recovered from her posterior fossa syndrome. She still has gag reflex issues, speech and processing delays and is still physically impaired with her lack of balance and inability to walk unassisted. We are praying for a complete and total healing and recovery. Abby is a very determined yet grace filled little girl. Her big blue eyes and her beautiful heartwarming smile connect you to her immediately. Our Christian faith has been our stronghold throughout our journey with Abby. Abby is a “girly girl” who loves pink, bows and barettes in her hair, having her fingernails polished and wearing necklaces and bracelets. She loves to play with her baby dolls and in her play kitchen, enjoys reading books, playing games, painting and doing all kinds of art and loves to talk on her play cellphones to her family and friends!
